Evgeny Fedorov of St Petersburg writes music for film, theatre and the stage. He is a composer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, and the founder of Tequilajazzz, Zorge and Optimystica Orchestra. His official site counts more than forty film and theatre scores. Fedorov joined his first band, Object of Ridicule, in 1986, and it toured the Soviet Union until 1991. The earliest screen credit on his site dates from 1992: the music for Rashid Nugmanov's Wild East. The site names fourteen feature films with their directors, from Andrey Libenson's Coma to Natalia Mirzoyan's Winter in March. He starts a film from the script. In the magazine Sobaka Fedorov said the text produces images and associations, and the music is written to match them. He put the Coma soundtrack on Bandcamp on 4 March 2012: 33 tracks, two of them bonus pieces, most running from one to three minutes. Kursk. The Invisible Mission was made for an exhibition and a film about the rescue operation around the submarine Kursk; Bandcamp dates it to 2002 and lists synthesizers, sampling and field recordings. Alongside film, Fedorov leads bands. Zorge began in September 2010 as a duo with the drummer Marc-Oliver Lauber and grew into a quartet. Fedorov called it art rock, close to Tequilajazzz but more experimental. Its Moscow debut took place on 18 February 2011, and the second album, Chto my znaem o ravnovesii? (What Do We Know About Balance?), came out in 2013. He assembles Optimystica Orchestra from musicians of well-known Russian rock bands, who play polished pop with a jazz tint in formal suits, from ska to bossa nova. The single Dozhd/Len came out in September 2018, and on 25 July 2019 the orchestra played the programme 8 Women at the Green Theatre in VDNKh, Moscow. In 2021 came the single Nemnogo navek, which Fedorov wrote on the piano and recorded with his 1975 synthesizer. His most visible recent score is for Winter in March, an animated film by Natalia Mirzoyan made at the Estonian Academy of Arts. In 2025 it won third prize, shared with another film, in the La Cinef section at Cannes. His official site names Stockholm and Tallinn as the cities where he works, and English, Russian and French as his languages.
