About
Asea Sool is a project from Batumi, Georgia: composer and guitarist Bek Bekson and his sister Atina Kornelius, who sings and writes the lyrics. Their music draws on Georgian folk, rock, delta blues and French chanson. The group recorded the soundtrack to a film by Nana Jorjadze. Two siblings who grew up in Batumi lead the project. Bek Bekson composes, plays guitar and arranges; Atina Kornelius writes the lyrics and sings. The band's official site dates the first album, Sazamtro FM, to 2011: it has twelve tracks, among them “Kaia”, “London” and “Way to India”. In 2013, according to Muse Cube and Jazzmap, the band appeared in listings for the Gorlitsa festival at the Darwin Museum and a concert on 24 December. Bek Bekson plays a one-of-a-kind guitar. Muse Cube's announcement says his father, a jeweller, designer and painter, came up with the instrument. A microphone is built into the body, and the guitarist uses it to create samples. He plays with his fingers and with a bow, and he runs the signal through a long row of pedals. The announcements describe Atina's voice as velvety and wide in range, and say singer Nino Katamadze praised it. The band's site names British rock and roll, American delta blues, French chanson and Georgian folk as the base of the sound. The band describes its concerts as a route from dreamy infatuation to dancing without restraint. In July 2014 the outlet Culturemeter listed Asea Sool among the guests on the red carpet at the Odesa International Film Festival. On 20 January 2017 the band entered Georgia's Eurovision national selection with the song “Nature” and finished 20th of 25 with 46 points, according to Eurovisionworld. On 28 April 2019 Asea Sool appears among the performers at Batumoba, the Batumi city festival. In 2014, Tengri News reports, Asea Sool performed the soundtrack to My Mermaid, My Lorelei, a film by Georgian director Nana Jorjadze, whose A Chef in Love became the first Georgian film nominated for an Oscar, in 1996. The eight-track album of the same name is on Bandcamp. Bandcamp also carries Asea Sool with Friends, where Sunsay takes part in the song “Вместе”. According to Apple Music, later releases include The Etudes of Life (2023), two versions of the single “You are completely different” (2024) and “Sunshine 3/4” (2025). The band's site places its music in fusion, jazz, rock, folk and funk. The live set brings Atina's voice, Bekson's guitar with its effects and bow, and songs titled in English, Russian and Georgian. In spring 2020 the musicians told Tengri News they were writing a new programme.
