Asea Sool and the screen: a soundtrack for Nana Jorjadze

About the artist: Asea Sool

In 2014 Asea Sool performed the soundtrack for My Mermaid, My Lorelei, a film by the Georgian director Nana Jorjadze, according to Tengri News. The band's Bandcamp page carries an album with the same title and describes it as the soundtrack to Jorjadze's film. Tengri News describes Jorjadze as a laureate of Cannes and a nominee for the Oscar. The credit goes to Asea Sool as a whole, and Bandcamp does not itemise who wrote or played what.

Jorjadze was born in Tbilisi in 1948 and has directed since the late 1970s. Her breakthrough, Robinsonada or My English Grandfather, won the Caméra d'Or at Cannes in 1987. Her film A Chef in Love received an Academy Award nomination in 1996, the first for a Georgian film. Wikipedia dates My Mermaid, My Lorelei to 2013, while Tengri places the band's work in 2014.

The album has eight tracks and runs 27 minutes and 33 seconds. It opens with “Bye, bye Berlin” and returns to the song in an acoustic version. “Take me to fly” sounds twice, as a song and as a remix, and a 4:30 track of the same name closes Asea Sool with Friends. The longest, “Bye, bye Berlin”, lasts 4:36 and the shortest, “Remember me”, 1:45. The other titles are “Without words”, “Nothing lasts forever” and “Wanted! Dead or Alive”. Bandcamp gives January 2020 as the release date. That is most likely the upload date, because the music was written for a film from 2014.

Film festivals were familiar ground for the band. A report from the opening of the fifth Odesa International Film Festival, dated 12 July 2014, lists Asea Sool among the acts that walked the red carpet in costumes the outlet calls original. The report presents that edition as an anniversary one.

In May 2020 Tengri News wrote that the band often opens international film festivals and named Odesa, Berlin, Sofia and Vilnius among the cities. The article gives no dates or festival names, so the list stands as the outlet's account.

The same article announced an Instagram Live for 22 May 2020 at 20:00, part of the #КвартирникTengri series of online home concerts, which ran during the COVID-19 restrictions and was organised by Alash Media Group and the production center Pantograph. The announcement promised a set of the band's best songs and a conversation with subscribers. The musicians said they were writing a new program and hoped to play a live show soon. Apple Music lists among the later releases the album The Etudes of Life from 2023.
